May 2024: Inspiring Future Scientists!

Read this blog to find out more about our school visits this year!

We were delighted to welcome 6th class students from Citywest and Saggart Community National School, and Presentation Girls’ Primary School Maynooth to our biology labs at the end of May. Dr Lorna Lopez, PhD candidate Enya Nordon and other talented demonstrators from Maynooth University’s Biology department performed many experiments igniting potential future interests in the world of science! We performed DNA extraction on bananas from ‘Cell Explorers’, studied microorganisms from the canal water under microscopes, examined animal skulls, and performed the explosive elephant toothpaste demonstration!

Special thanks to Dr David Fitzpatrick and Professor Kevin

Kavanagh for their demonstrations.

We have travelled to multiple schools during the past year to perform these experiments and we plan to continue this next year! In November 2023, Dr Lorna Lopez, Aoife Brennan and Enya Nordon from the team joined Deirdre Daly to visit the 3rd class students in Presentation Girls’ Primary School Maynooth and performed the banana cell extraction. Also, in January 2024, Enya Nordon and Deirdre Daly were delighted to visit 1st class and junior infants of St. Patricks National School Baconstown. Here, they performed the experiments previously mentioned and created DIY lava lamps!

Thank you so much to all the students, staff and demonstrators who make these visits possible. We are excited to continue spreading knowledge to the younger generations and inspiring future scientists!
